It is a common experience: an outfit looks perfect on the hanger or in a photograph, but once worn, something feels slightly off. More often than not, the issue is fit, not the outfit itself, and this is exactly what alterations are meant to solve.

Fit affects how an outfit actually looks, not just how it feels

A blouse that is even slightly too loose across the back, or a lehenga waist that sits a little too high or low, changes how the entire outfit falls and photographs, regardless of how expensive the fabric or embroidery is. Proper alterations address these small issues that are easy to overlook when trying on an outfit briefly in a store.

When to consider alterations

Alterations are worth considering whenever you buy an outfit off the rack rather than having it custom stitched, when your body measurements have changed since an outfit was last worn, when inheriting or borrowing an outfit from a family member, or when an outfit simply feels uncomfortable in ways you cannot quite pinpoint.

What can typically be altered

Blouses can usually be taken in or let out at the side seams, and sleeves can be adjusted in length. Lehenga waistbands can be resized, and skirt length can be adjusted. Sarees can be refitted at the fall and pico. Not every alteration is possible on every garment, so it is worth asking a tailor directly what is achievable for your specific outfit.

The limits of alteration

Some changes are more involved than others. Taking in a garment is generally easier than letting it out significantly, since letting out depends on how much seam allowance was left in the original stitching. If you know your measurements may change before an event, it is worth mentioning this early so the original stitching allows room for adjustment later.

Alterations save money compared to re-stitching

In many cases, altering an existing outfit costs significantly less than having a new one stitched from scratch, making it a practical option when you already own an outfit you love but it no longer fits quite right.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I get alterations done before an event?

A week or two is usually enough for straightforward alterations like taking in a blouse or adjusting a hemline, but it is best to avoid leaving it until the last few days in case the garment needs more than one round of fitting.

Can alterations be done on heavily embroidered outfits?

Yes, though it requires more care and sometimes more time, since embroidery and embellishment need to be carefully handled or reapplied around any seam changes.
