Saree Fall and Pico: What It Is and Why Every Saree Needs It

Fall and pico are small finishing details that make a big difference to how a saree drapes and lasts. Here is what they are and why they matter.

Fall and pico are two of the smallest, least glamorous parts of preparing a saree, and precisely because they are so easy to overlook, many sarees are worn without them, which affects how the saree drapes and how long it lasts.

What a saree fall is

A fall is a strip of fabric stitched along the inner bottom edge of a saree. It adds weight to the hem, which helps the saree drape with a cleaner, straighter fall and also protects the saree's actual fabric from direct contact with the floor, where it is most likely to collect dust or fray over repeated wear.

What pico stitching is

Pico is a fine, scalloped edge stitching applied along the border of a saree to prevent the fabric from fraying, particularly on delicate fabrics like chiffon and georgette where the raw edge can otherwise unravel with wear and washing.

Why both matter for how a saree looks worn

Without a proper fall, a saree's pleats are more likely to lose their shape through the day, and the hem can look uneven in photographs. Without pico, the edges of a delicate saree can start to look worn and frayed sooner than they should, even with careful handling.

When to get it done

Ideally, fall and pico should be done as soon as a new saree is bought, before it is worn for the first time, since this is when the fabric is in its best condition to work with. For sarees that already show some fraying, pico can still be added, though it works best as a preventive step rather than a repair.

It is a small cost for a noticeably better drape

Fall and pico stitching is a relatively inexpensive service compared to the cost of the saree itself, but the difference it makes to how the saree hangs and holds up over time is significant, which is why most tailoring studios recommend it as standard practice for any new saree.

Frequently asked questions

Does every saree need pico, or only delicate fabrics?

While pico is most important for delicate, easily fraying fabrics like chiffon and georgette, it is commonly added to most sarees as a general finishing step, since it protects the border regardless of fabric type.

Can fall and pico be done on a saree that has already been worn several times?

Yes, it can be done at any point, though it is most effective when done early, before any fraying or hem damage has already occurred.
